Mackay Street Chaplaincy Inc.
Reaching Out Into The City Heart.
The launch at Blue Water Quay on December 7, 2012 by the Mayor, Cr. Dierdre Comerford. From left: the Rev’d Ann Dittmar-McCollim, founding President, Mayor Comerford, Inspector Craig Sanderson, QPS,
Cr. Chris Bonanno and Cr. David Perkins, City Safe Committee.
“I wondered why somebody didn’t do something.
Then I realised, I am somebody.” Author unknown.
Mackay Street Chaplaincy offers a caring presence, engaging with night club patrons and others offering practical help: water, first aid, and a listening ear. The chaplains cooperate with police, ambulance, security personnel and taxi marshalls to provide a safeguard for those in need of assistance in our nightclub precinct .
The volunteers wearing distinctive purple vests patrol in pairs, seeking ways to assist people who may be at risk.
Our goal is to help make nights out in the City Heart safer and more enjoyable, and to assist people to get home safely.
Since December 2012, Mackay Street Chaplains have become well-known in the City Centre on Friday evenings as well as on some special dates such as New Year. The teams are made up of volunteers from across the churches of Mackay as well as from the wider community and have the support of Mackay businesses, our Council’s City Safe Committee and Police.
